Sherry is a young woman with a history of drug abuse & emotional turmoil. Just out of prison she finds herself struggling against all odds to reconnect with her estranged 5-year-old daughter while trying to readjust to the outside world. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 01/23/2007 Starring: Maggie Gyllenhaal Brad William Henke Run time: 96 minutes Rating: RA disturbing film about a recovering drug addict trying to regain control of her life, Sherrybaby succinctly depicts what can happen when want and desire aren't offset by control. In this bleak indie film, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stranger Than Fiction, Secretary) has just been released from a three-year stint in prison. Dressed in her inappropriate uniform of a halter top and oh-so-high platform heels, she goes to brother's house to see her 5-year-old daughter, Lexie (Ryan Simp! kins). Sherry is determined to be a mother to her child, but without a home, job, or any other form of stability, she grows frustrated and jealous of her brother and sister-in-law's roles in Lexie's life. Tall and willowy, Gyllenhaal brings a sad desperation and simmering sexuality to the role. Sherry's middle-class childhood was a blur of sex and drugs, and she seems incapable of breaking out of that destructive trap. While the script by first-time feature film director Laurie Collyer isn't wholly original, the picture moves at a good pace, giving insight as to why Sherry's resigned to using sex to get what she wants. While the family secret doesn't come as a complete surprise, it is somewhat perplexing that no one addresses it. Ultimately, it's Gyllenhaal who makes you care about a character that most people would've given up on. --Jae-Ha KimLee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a few strikes against her when she applies for a secretarial position at the law office ! of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). At first the work seems quit! e normal but soon, in between typing, filing and coffee making, Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship together, crossing the lines of conduct that would give any human resource director the vapors! This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-right! eous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret FetzerJames Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the dark comedy Secretary. Praised as “daring, funny and quirkily erotic!” (Glenn Kenny, PREMIERE) and “sexy and highly stylized” (GEAR magazine), Secretary is the story of Lee Holloway (Gyllenhaal), a young woman with a few strikes against her after a brief stay in a mental hospital, who accepts a secretarial position working at the law office of E. Edward Grey (Spader). The work seems normal at first, but somewhere between the typing, filing and coffee-making, Lee and her new boss cross the line of their professional relationship and enter into a Human Resources nightmare! This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Junko is a quiet and good-natured young lady born with a secret power unlike anything you have ever seen. Pyrokinesis, a deadly form of ESP, enables her to incinerate anything on command. Her simple, uneventful life is disrupted and she is pushed past her boiling point when a group of murdering teenage thugs kills a close friend. Now no one is safe from the fires of vengeance!Sakurai (Inagaki Goro) is a section chief in an insurance company who is well-known for his tremendous ability to suck up to his bosses, sometimes to the embarrassment of his girlfriend and OL co-worker Naomi (Yada Akiko). Just when Sakurai thought he could be promoted to department chief, the company gets into trouble and is bought over, Sakurai's boss Tokugawa is sacked, and a high-flying, no-nonsense female executive Ogata (Asano Yuko) takes over. Sakurai's habits are initially embarrassing and irritating ! to her, but his value soon emerges as he manages to retain old customers, stop his outstanding co-worker Shiraishi (Ichikawa Somegoro) and others from leaving, and smoothen the transition for everyone. An entertaining collection of stories reminiscent of the classic Twilight Zone television show, Tales of the Unusual: Eiga no Tokubetsu-hen begins with a group of stranded commuters trapped together by a sudden rainstorm. To pass the time, one of the young men begins to tell a story, but he's hijacked by a mysterious old man, who begins to tell four very different stories of the strange and unusual. In story one, a stranded group of explorers suffers guilt over the inadvertent death of one of their own. They take shelter in a small cabin, but they sense they are not alone. In story two, an ancient Japanese soldier finds his destiny altered by a bizarre cell phone call from the future - which happens to be from a concerned historian! In story three, an embittered chess master is hired by a millionaire to play a real life game that supposedly will decide the fate of scores of people. And in story four, an engaged couple visits a marriage bureau and receives a virtual reality simulation of their future matrimony. Will the preview be enough to get them to call it off? Featuring numerous familiar Japanese actors, and crossing various genres from comedy to drama to horror, Tales of the Unusual: Eiga no Tokubetsu-hen is an engaging and enjoyable anthology for those who enjoy any and all forms of Japanese cinema.

Description:
This paper considers the ideal dynamic user optimal (DUO) route choice problem using a route-based variational inequality appr! oach. A discrete time dynamic flow model is developed, which u! ses link travel time functions to determine time-dependent network states. The proposed flow model is built on discrete time flow variables, to eliminate the discretization process of continuous time based models. Continuity of route travel time functions is proven to establish the existence of a solution, on the condition that the link travel time functions are continuous. Furthermore, flow dispersion and concentration can be simulated, which is expected to enhance the ability of capturing dynamics of traffic movements. A variational inequality formulation based on an alternative cost mapping is proposed, which is derived from a route swapping heuristic approach. As a solution method, the projection-based approach is used since the route travel time functions in our model are not smooth. To increase the performance of the projection-based methods, an efficient implementation of the projection operation is developed. Computational experiences with two example networks are provided t! o illustrate the model. (Horror) Ji-won is a bright young student with amnesia. Fifty Pills

  • FIFTY PILLS - WIDESCREEN (DVD MOVIE)
Based on the propaganda film from 1936 that has become a cult hit, Reefer Madness is the height of camp entertainment! Framed as a "documentary", a straight-laced high school principal (Alan Cumming) seeks to impart his wisdom about the demon weed by telling a frightful tale about the fate of two innocent teens who fall under the spell of the drugs. Filled with outrageously funny and musical performances by Neve Campbell, Christian Campbell, Kristen Bell and Steven Weber, Reefer Madness is the feel good event of the year!If the idea of making a musical out of Roger Corman's Z-movie quickie The Little Shop of Horrors sounded weird, stick around for the all-singing, all-dancing Reefer Madness. Deliriously based on the notorious 1936 anti-pot social-guidance film, this is an ultra-campy enterprise that lands somewhere between Rocky Horror! and a John Waters comedy. Christian Campbell and the spritzy Kristen Bell play the innocent teens lured into a soul-sapping cloud of marijuana dependence by pencil-mustached pusher Steven Weber and his long-suffering dame, Ana Gasteyer. The cast includes femme fatale Amy Spanger and a cameo by Neve Campbell, who dances her way through one sequence. The musical was written and composed by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, who re-create some of the kookiest scenes from the original movie ("Faster! Faster!"). Their funniest idea is to frame the sordid saga with a black-and-white story of a government agent showing a public-service film to horrified small-town citizens; he's played by the reliably sinister Alan Cumming, who also pops up in a variety of guises in the film-within-the-film. The only problem with this made-for-Showtime version of the stage show is that camp tends to wear thin, especially at 109 minutes, despite the expert song parodies. Even the original hour-long ! Reefer Madness got old quick. --Robert HortonOffici! al Selec tion - Tribeca Film Festival 2006; Bonus Features: Filmmakers' Commentary; Deleted & Extended Scenes; Behind the Scenes Featurette
